Auto Insurance Coverages
  • Bodily Injury Liability : Pays for the injuries you, the policyholder, or the designated driver, cause to another person. If you do not carry enough liability insurance and cause a serious accident, you can end up paying large sums of money after your insurance limit is exhausted. Your liability limit is a very important number to pay attention to when it comes to protecting your assets.
  • Property Damage Liability:   Pays for damage you cause to someone else's car or other property.
  • Medical Payments : Pays for medical expenses of the driver and passengers of the policyholder's car.
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist : Reimburses you, a designated driver, or a member of your family if one of you is hit by an uninsured or underinsured driver. Coverage is also available if you are injured as a pedestrian. This limit should always be the same as your bodily injury limit. Do not lower this limit to save dollars on your premium.
  • Collision: Reimburses you for damage to your automobile if it is upset or impacted by another vehicle or object. This is where the cost to repair your vehicle comes from if you are at fault or if you get hit by an uninsured driver. Increasing your collision deductible is one way to decrease your premium.
  • Comprehensive (Other Than Collision):  Reimburses you for damage to your auto caused by fire, theft, explosion, earthquake, falling objects, windstorm, hail, water, flood, vandalism, riot or civil commotion, glass breakage, or contact with a bird or animal. Think of this as protection for damages not caused by a collision. Increasing your comprehensive deductible is one way to decrease your premium.
  • Additional Coverages Available: Towing expense, rental car coverage, lease/loan gap coverage, extended non-owned, named non-owned, custom equipment, or electronic equipment.

  • Cargo Insurance : Also known as coverage for your load, this provides coverage for loss or damage to the property on a truck while it is being transported.
  • Trailer Interchange :Also known as trailer physical damage for trailers you do not own, but have a contractual obligation to insure. If you are hauling for Amazon this is requirement.

Commercial trucking and contract trucking
The main difference between commercial trucking and contract trucking is that commercial trucking is for the general public, while contract trucking is for a limited number of customers:

* Commercial trucking
Also known as common carrier trucking, this type of trucking is open to the general public and is legally required to transport goods or passengers if there is space and the fee is paid.

* Contract trucking
Also known as private carrier trucking, this type of trucking is for a limited number of customers and is often based on exclusive contracts. Contract carriers can offer customized logistics solutions and more predictable cost structures.

Why Do You Need Commercial Auto Coverage?

Commercial auto insurance is necessary for several reasons if you use vehicles for business purposes. Here are some reasons why you need commercial auto insurance:
1.    Legal Requirements: In many jurisdictions, it's mandatory to have commercial auto insurance for vehicles used for business purposes. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in fines, penalties, and even the suspension of your business operations.
2.    Greater Coverage: Commercial auto insurance typically offers higher coverage limits compared to personal auto insurance policies. This is crucial in case of accidents or damage that may involve higher costs.
3.    Liability Protection: It provides liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage that you or your employees may cause while using a business vehicle. Without this coverage, you might be personally liable for such expenses.
4.    Business Property Protection: Commercial auto insurance can cover the theft, vandalism, or damage to tools or equipment you have permanently installed in your in your vehicles. This is especially important for businesses that rely on their vehicles to carry valuable equipment.
5.    Employee Coverage: If you have employees who drive company vehicles, commercial auto insurance can cover them in case of accidents, reducing your liability as an employer.
6.    Rental or Replacement Vehicles: It may provide coverage for rental or replacement vehicles if your business vehicles are temporarily out of commission due to accidents or other covered events.
7.    Specialized Coverage: Commercial auto insurance can offer specialized coverage options tailored to the specific needs of your business, such as coverage for delivery vehicles, food trucks, or commercial trailers.
8.    Risk Management: Having commercial auto insurance is a crucial part of your risk management strategy. It helps protect your business from unexpected financial losses due to accidents or other vehicle-related incidents.
9.    Professional Reputation: Proper insurance coverage can enhance your professional reputation. Clients, partners, and customers may have more confidence in your business when they know you're adequately insured.
10. Peace of Mind: Knowing that your business vehicles and operations are protected by insurance can provide peace of mind, allowing you to focus on growing your business without worrying about potential financial setbacks.

Commercial Auto Coverages

Like your personal auto policy, commercial auto insurance provides similar coverages such as liability, collision, comprehensive, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage. However, there are differences such as eligibility, definitions, coverages, exclusions, and limits.
  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage : Pays for bodily injury or death resulting from an accident for which you are at fault and in most cases provides you with a legal defense.
  • Property Damage Liability Coverage : Provides you with protection if your vehicle accidentally damages another person's property and in most cases provides you with a legal defense.
  • Medical Payments : Usually pays for the medical expenses of the driver and passengers in your vehicle incurred as a result of a covered accident regardless of fault.
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage : Pays for your injuries and, in some circumstances, certain property damage caused by an uninsured or a hit-and-run driver. In some cases, underinsured motorist coverage is also included. This is for cases in which the at-fault driver has insufficient insurance.
  • Comprehensive Physical Damage Coverage : Pays for damage to your vehicle from theft, vandalism, flood, fire, and other covered perils.
  • Collision Coverage : Pays for damage to your vehicle when it hits, or is hit, by another object.
